Alcohol-Selective Oxidation in Water under Mild Conditions via a Novel Approach to Hybrid Composite Photocatalysts

2015

Abstract The oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds in a clean fashion (i.e., with water as a solvent or under solvent‐free conditions, and using O2 or H2O2 as the primary oxidant) is the subject of considerable research efforts. A new approach for the selective oxidation of soluble aromatic alcohols in water under mild conditions via a novel composite photocatalyst has been developed. The catalyst is synthesized by grafting 4‐(4‐(4‐hydroxyphenylimino)cyclohexa‐2,5dienylideneamino)phenol and silver nanoparticles onto the surface of moderately crystalline titanium dioxide. The titanium dioxide‐based composite was first extensively characterized and then employed in the catalytic oxidati…

Visual Health Nanocomposites: Present and Future

2021

Background: In recent years, the therapeutics for eye diseases as retinopathy diabetic, dry eye, glaucoma and contact lenses fabrication are including nanocompounds as ocular drug delivery systems, biomarkers for detection of eye diseases, copper and silver ions that has been incorporated by means of the nanotechnology for the production of less toxic and more effective alternatives. Several compounds such as silver nanoparticles, turmeric-based nanocomposites, neovascularization blockers and nanoparticles extracted from the plant Costus pictus among others have been researched for this purpose. Those compounds are some of the promising research efforts that are studying and will contribute…

Characterization of transparent silver loaded poly(l-lactide) films produced by melt-compounding for the sustained release of antimicrobial silver io…

2014

Abstract In the present study, thermally stable silver complexes were produced and incorporated into a poly-( l -lactide) (PLA) matrix by melt-compounding. The effect of the different formulations on the mechanical and color properties was first evaluated. Additionally, the release of silver ions to an aqueous environment was also monitored over time by anodic stripping voltammetry and correlated with the antimicrobial performance against Salmonella enterica. The incorporation of some silver compounds with contents of 1 wt% did not affect the mechanical or optical properties of the films. The films showed a good potential for application in surface treatment and demonstrated a sustainable, …

In Situ Colorimetric Quantification of Silver Cations in the Presence of Silver Nanoparticles

2013

Silver ions (Ag(+)) can be quantified in situ in the presence of AgNPs by using a colorimetric sensing probe (3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine). Interestingly, it also enables detection of the Ag(+) adsorbed on the AgNP surface. This is relevant to design new methods to make AgNPs while ensuring the total reduction of Ag(+).

Behaviour of sediment-associated silver nanoparticles and their toxicity to Lumbriculus variegatus

2017

The increasing use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in industry and consumer products results in the increasing environmental concentrations of AgNPs. In the aquatic environment, sediment is the major sink for the AgNPs. The behaviour and toxicity of AgNPs in sediments is largely unknown, and therefore the potential risk to the benthic ecosystems is difficult to predict. The aim of this thesis was to study the toxicity and uptake of uncoated AgNPs (uc-AgNPs) and polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated AgNPs (PVP-AgNPs) to Lumbriculus variegatus in sediment exposures. Also, the association of AgNP-originated dissolved Ag with sediment components was studied using a sequential extraction method. Studies w…

Matching emission centers of electrons and photons in current-carrying silver nanoparticle films

2019

Current flow through a nanoparticle film (two-dimensional ensemble of small tunnel-coupled metal particles on a dielectric substrate) is accompanied by electron and photon emission. It has a localized character (originates from emission centers). With an increase in applied voltage, the number of emission centers increases, and with further increase, some of them may burn out. In dark conditions, photon emission centers are visible with a bare eye. To visualize electron emission centers, emission electron microscopy is used. The conducted measurements allow comparison of the number and relative positions of electron and photon emission centers. It is shown that electrons and photons are emi…

Plasmonic nanostructures for light trapping in thin-film solar cells

2019

Abstract The optical properties of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR) sustained by self-assembled silver nanoparticles are of great interest for enhancing light trapping in thin film photovoltaics. First, we report on a systematic investigation of the structural and the optical properties of silver nanostructures fabricated by a solid-state dewetting process on various substrates. Our study allows to identify fabrication conditions in which circular, uniformly spaced nanoparticles are obtainable. The optimized NPs are then integrated into plasmonic back reflector (PBR) structures. Second, we demonstrate a novel procedure, involving a combination of opto-electronic spectroscopic tec…

Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation of TiZr Alloy in ZnONPs-Contained Solution: Structural and Biological Assessment

2020

Titanium (Ti) and its alloys with zirconium (Zr) due of their biological safety, lower elastic modulus and excellent corrosion resistance are the most attractive metallic materials for medical applications. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is an environment-friendly process with rapid deposition of anodic oxide coating on the implant surface. PEO coating can incorporate different nanoparticles (NPs) into implant surface such as ZnO that stimulates osteoblast proliferation and mineralization, possesses antibacterial ability. The aim of current research was to evaluate structural and chemical properties of TiZr-alloy with addition ZnO NPs after the PEO in Ca/P solution. The alloy of the Ti…

Antiviral properties of silver nanoparticles against norovirus surrogates and their efficacy in coated polyhydroxyalkanoates systems

2017

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP) have strong broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and gained increased attention for the development of AgNP based products, including medical and food applications. Initially, the efficacy of AgNP and silver nitrate (AgNO3) was evaluated for inactivating norovirus surrogates, the feline calicivirus (FCV) and the murine norovirus (MNV). These norovirus surrogates were exposed to AgNO3 and AgNP solutions for 24 h at 25 °C and then analyzed by cell-culture assays. Both AgNP and silver ions significantly decreased FCV and MNV infectivity in a dose-dependent manner between concentrations of 2.1 and 21 mg/L. Furthermore, poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (…

Effect of silver deposits on the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide samples for the dehydrogenation or oxidation of 2-propanol

1991

Abstract Until now, the effect of the deposition of metal particles onto a powdered semiconductor oxide on its photocatalytic activity has been determined for group VIII transition metals only. In this study, AGTiO2 samples were prepared by photodeposition, characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and tested, under band-gap illumination, using the oxidation of 2-propanol (neat liquid phase or mixed with water) in the absence or presence of molecular oxygen. The silver deposits were found to be metallic both before and after use, but the size of the particles and their distribution on the support were markedly influenced by the type …
